The Grammar-Translation Approach

I basically use this method for the Students of university entrance or selectivity (selectividad) exam in Spain although it can be used for students who are not really interested in learning to speak but to read and understand. Classes are taught in Spanish if the students don't understand spoken English. Elaborate explanations of grammar are always provided. Grammar instruction provides the rules for putting words together; instruction often focuses on the form and inflection of words. Reading and translating of difficult texts and writing essays are begun early in the course of study. Little attention is given to pronunciation and students will have done at least ten model exams before the real one.
